Ski Buddies returns to Sun Mountain and the Methow Valley!

Sun Mountain and Winthrop offer 130 miles of groomed trails and spectacular flat valley and mountain terrain cross-country skiing at all levels.  February is the best month for snow at Winthrop and Okanogan County.  This is some of the best cross-country skiing in the country according to X-Country Skier Magazine.

Please join trip leader, Paul Horne, and other Ski Buddies the weekend of February 2-4, 2018.  We will arrive at Sun Mountain on Friday afternoon and depart Sunday afternoon while staying at the largest groomed Nordic ski area in the PNW in the scenic Methow Valley. This is a huge area with over 60 KM in groomed trails!

We are staying in the rustic Lake Patterson Cabins which are ski in/out. The cabins are located near the main lodge with all the other amenities available for our use.  Paul will provide dinner on Friday evening.  Breakfasts will also be provided on Saturday and Sunday

Cost for both nights is $260 per single bed or $520 queen bed (one or two people).  Space is limited to four queens and four single beds.  If we have a lot of interest, we may be able to secure another unit.

For Saturday night, Paul suggests a VERY FUN Sleigh Ride & Cowboy dinner.  Paul reports that he's done it previously and it's a fun and cool evening.  The Clydesdale drawn large sleigh departs the main lodge Saturday evening at 5pm sharp. The brief ride takes us to the top of a hill overlooking the valley and to a large cozy tent. Inside awaits a buffet style cowboy dinner served by friendly locals. The cost is $54 per person - great value and entertainment.  Paul has reserved six spots so let Paul know ASAP if you plan to attend the Saturday evening dinner.  Payment for this must be made either in advance or by 10am on Saturday at the activities office near ski shop in the main lodge.

For those going on this trip, Paul recommends taking Friday off as the drive from Seattle to Winthrop is a minimum 6 hours drive via Ellensburg in ideal weather . You can NOT get there in winter via SR20 through Cascades National Park.

Like all Ski Buddies trips, the first ones to pay in full are on the trip.  Don't delay booking as this trip will sell out quickly.

Ski Buddies is heading to Japan!

You and other members will spend 5 nights at the slope-side Hakuba ski area west of Tokyo with true ski in/out located at the Hutte Shiroi Koya Hotel with "western style"  twin beds.  Each room has 2 twin beds for 2 members to share @ $550 per person.  All of the rooms have views of the mountain and a private bathroom.  Breakfast, dinner and WIFI are included. The hotel also has its on "onsen" hot bath which will take away the pain from a long day on the mountain.  The hotel is located within 15 minutes walk to the center of the village where bountiful restaurants and bars are located! The Hakuba main ski gondola is only 10 minute walk or quick ski/ride on the slopes from the front door of the hotel.  There are several other ski areas to choose from within a short shuttle ride as well.

On Friday,  February 16th after checking out of the hotel around 10am, we will go as a group to visit the famous Jigokudani Snow Monkey park near Nagano before returning to Tokyo via the same high speed train.

To conclude our trip, we will be spending 2 nights in Tokyo before departure onward on Sunday, 2/18.  Our hotel, APA Hotel Shinjuku, in Tokyo, is in the heart of the gay nightlife in the ni-chome section.  Each room has 2 twin beds with private bath for 2 members to share.  The hotel is only a 10 -15 minute walk to the bars, restaurants and train station in Shinjuku.  The hotel also features its own "onsen"/spa!

    Transportation Details:
We will take the high speed train from NRT (Tokyo Narita) to the ski resort with payment for transportation on your own upon arrival in Japan.  As example, my flight on ANA leaves SEA at 12:20pm on Saturday, 2/10 and arrives NRT at 3:40pm on Sunday, 2/11.  Delta also operates the only other direct flight and it arrives at 3:45 on 2/11! You must book a flight to arrive before 4pm on Sunday, 2/11!!  Presently both flights price the same at $1,462 in coach round-trip and $6,258 in business round-trip.  After immigration, we will board the 30 minute local train from the airport to Ueno avoiding the city of Tokyo itself where we will connect to the high speed train to Nagano.  The high speed train leaves at 6:30pm and 7:30pm with just a 76 minute ride covering over 100 miles costing less than $70!  From Nagano, we will either share taxi service to the ski resort or use local train/bus service for the 1 hour final part of the journey.  This will make our arrival at the hotel in Hakuba ski area between 9 and 10pm.

Trip & Lodge Lowdown: The Stevens Pass Weekend is the longest running Ski Buddies trip (36th consecutive year since 1982!) and one of the most popular. Prices will also include very basic continental breakfasts. Most dinners tend to be a potluck with the Saturday dinner as the main potluck where we invite others to join us up in the mountain for the day and then come back to the cabin to enjoy a nice dinner before heading home.

Lunches, dinners, lift tickets and transportation are participants’ responsibility through most dinners tend to be potlucks with people sharing dishes.

Join Us For the Day or Saturday Potluck:  Club members are welcome to join us during the day or meet us at lunch time if they come up for the day.  Feel free to contact the trip leader by texting his cell phone (Cell service is spotty, so texting works the best).  We’ll try to meet up around 9AM at the Clock each day on Friday and Saturday.  As always, we have our official potluck on Saturday night and all are welcome to come back with us and enjoy dinner before heading back (or pass out at the lodge)
